Gorges du Loup – The Aqueduct Walk

17 October, 2012

Spent most of the day on the Aquaduc du Foulon which doubles up as the GR51 from Le Bar Sur Loup to the top of the Gorges du Loup. Truly spectacular trail going in and out of long dark tunnels and along high balconies with views of the Gorges and mountains. There is nothing to warn one of how great the trail is. There is minimal signage and no description of the phenomenon. Why is it there? Who built it? When? How much water does it carry and from where to where? There is no notice board telling us any  of these things.  Starting in Chateuneuf-Grasse we found an unmarked track with the help of a workman which, some false turns, got us above Le Bar Sur Loup and onto the GR51. We finished at Courmes which sits above the Gorges in a vaguely flat area below the peaks. A lovely day in warm sun was well rounded off at the Auberge de Courmes run by a young family in their first venture. Outstanding food and homely room. We recommend this Auberge to all. We expect a quiet night here apart from the owls.

  1. The “canal du Foulon” was completed in 1889; its purpose was to bring water from the “Source de Foulon” to the city of Grasse. It is no longer used today. In 2007, I followed the aqueduct starting from Pont-de-Loup; here’s a web page about this excursion:
